Substation Footprint: How a Two-Storey E-House Fits 157.5 m² of Rooms on 90 m²

When the upper level sits within the lower one, a two-storey E-House adds equipment rooms without enlarging the substation footprint. At a 35 kV substation in Ninghai, China, the eight modules ETENZ built for Sieyuan Electric hold 157.5 m² of equipment rooms on a 90 m² footprint.

The two-storey E-House at the 35 kV prefabricated substation in Shepantu, Ninghai County, is made up of eight modules: five on the lower level, 12 × 7.5 m overall, and three on the upper level, 9 × 7.5 m overall, with each level 3.6 m high. Its four equipment rooms total 157.5 m². Because the upper level stands within the outline of the lower one, the E-House occupies only the lower level's 12 × 7.5 m, or 90 m². ETENZ manufactured the E-House for Sieyuan Electric and delivered it to site in October 2026; the modules have been joined on site and equipment commissioning is under way.

What Goes on Each Level

The lower level holds the 35 kV switchgear room (7.5 × 4.8 m) and the 10 kV switchgear room (7.5 × 7.2 m). Switchgear is heavy and carries many incoming and outgoing cables, so it stays at ground level. The upper level holds the protection and control room (7.5 × 5.625 m) and the 10 kV capacitor bank room (7.5 × 3.375 m): the protection, measurement and control, and communication panels share one room, and the capacitor cabinets have a room of their own.

What a Two-Storey E-House Adds Over a Single Level

  • Exposed platform: the part of the lower roof that the upper level leaves uncovered becomes a platform and walkway, laid with WPC decking behind 1.2 m guardrails.
  • Access between levels: two steel access stairs are built at a 45° pitch with step spacing of 200 to 255 mm; the upper level has doors that open both ways, and a caged ladder leads on to the upper roof.
  • Cabling between levels: the lower level has a cable shaft, and the cable openings and spare panel positions between the levels are closed with cover plates before the modules leave the factory, to be opened on site as needed.
  • Assembly and waterproofing: the eight modules are built separately in the factory; on site the lower level is joined first, the upper level is stacked on top, and every module seam is waterproofed.

The land for a complete substation also covers the main transformer, incoming and outgoing lines and internal roads, as set by the project design. For the E-House itself, the two-storey layout places 157.5 m² of equipment rooms on 90 m² of ground. ETENZ built the enclosure to the EPC contractor's technical agreement and brand identity and fitted out the auxiliary systems, including lighting and power distribution, HVAC and earthing.
